ABOUT “THE ENLIGHTENED MAN”
“The Enlightened Man,” by Dan Doyle, employs the A.R. Gurney letter exchange
approach, in this case a profound exchange between a white Priest and a black inmate. In the early stages of the play, the two begin to forge a bond through their love of basketball and mutual admiration of hoop legends Bob Cousy and Connie Hawkins.
Letter by constructive letter, the Priest leads the inmate on a transformational journey
towards enlightenment, addressing such issues as non violence, societal obligations and empathy. Act I of the play was recently stage read to a group of inmates. The reaction was one
of renewal and realization.
The play will be entered into International Playwright Competitions in 2019. Don’t miss it!
